Today
Backbone of southern Ghana’s grid

Ghana’s electricity story began in 1914, with the first public power supply switched on at Sekondi under the Ghana Railway Administration. What started as a small railway-run operation grew steadily over the decades: becoming the Electricity Department in 1947, the Electricity Corporation of Ghana in 1967, and finally Electricity Company of Ghana Limited in 1997. Along the way, ECG weathered the creation of VRA and GRIDCo as separate entities, a brief and turbulent private-sector partnership in 2019, and emerged today as the backbone of power distribution in southern Ghana.

About ECG

That journey has shaped the ECG of today: a limited liability company wholly owned by the Government of Ghana, operating under the Ministry of Energy. As the state-owned utility responsible for the distribution and retail supply of electricity across Southern Ghana, ECG serves a customer base of close to 5 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers across eight administrative regions. Beyond its domestic footprint, ECG also exports power to neighbouring Togo and Benin, underscoring its role as a regional player in West Africa’s energy landscape.

As a critical national infrastructure provider, ECG plays a central role in powering homes, businesses, hospitals, schools, and industries that drive Ghana’s economic and social development. Its network underpins virtually every facet of daily life: from keeping the lights on in family homes to powering the hospitals that save lives, the factories that create jobs, and the schools that shape the country’s future.

Guided by its mandate to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient electricity distribution services, ECG continues to invest in modernizing its operations, strengthening governance, and adopting global best practices, a commitment that echoes over a century of adaptation, from a small colonial-era power supply to a modern utility serving millions.
